5 Themes of Geography (Aug - Sep)

Welcome to World Geography! Below you can find links to most assignments and activities we do in class, as well as rough dates for each unit. 

Here are a couple of forms students may need in-case you forget to pick them up in class: 

Current Event Sheet

For the first few weeks of class we will be examining the 5 themes of geography which lay the foundation for understanding our world and our relationship with it. 

The 5 Themes of Geography:

  1. Location

  2. Place

  3. Movement

  4. Region

  5. Human-Environment Interaction

Map Skills (September)

During this unit students will learn how to identify, use, and master essential map skills, such as practicing latitude and longitude, measuring distances, finding directions, and identifying symbols and colors. To accomplish this, students will practice using a variety of atlases and maps.  

USA (Sep - Oct)

The USA is our first region under examination. In this unit students will be learning all 50 state names and capitals. We will also identify all physical features of the US. 

Population (Oct - Nov)

My favorite unit of the year! In this unit we do an in-depth analysis of world population, and study the driving forces that determine the growth or reduction of individual country populations. 

Latin America (Nov - Dec)

During this 2 week unit students will learn all the political and physical features of Latin America. Including country names, capitals, major cities, and land and water features for Central and South America and the Caribbean. 

Land Forms (December)

In this unit students will learn about major land forms included in the lithosphere and hydrosphere. Students will become familiar with terrestrial landscapes and bodies of water. 

Africa (Jan - Feb)

During this unit students will learn all 54 African countries and major physical features of Africa. This unit also includes an in-depth study of African culture, government, and economy. 

Culture (Feb - Mar)

Students will learn all the basic elements that make-up one's culture including: race, religion, language, and ethnicity. This includes an extensive look into the culture of Sub-Saharan Africa. 

Europe (Mar - Apr)

Students will be able to identify all political features of Europe including countries, capitals, and major cities. Students will also locate the major physical features of Europe. 

Government (Apr - May)

In this unit students will be comparing three major world government systems: democracy, communism, and totalitarianism. Students will compare their creation, teachings, and its application throughout the world. 

Asia (May)

Students will be able to locate and identify all political features of Asia including countries, capitals, and major cities. Students will also identify major physical features of Asia. 

Culture Fair (May)

All 9th grade World Geography students will have the opportunity to participate in our end-of-year culture fair here at CMMS. Students have the opportunity to showcase a country of their choosing from around the world. The culture fair is a fun and unique way for students to present all their country's research to students, teachers, parents, and faculty.
